Headquartered in Madrid, the company manufactures a wide spectrum of defense equipment, including combat vehicles, artillery systems, light weapons and munitions.
Product reliability has been proven in over 50 countries, including many NATO countries. SBS has five main business lines:
* Armored vehicles
* Special and amphibious vehicles
* Weapons
* Ammunitions
* Propellants and Research & Development (R&D)
The company currently has a license to co-produce the Leopard 2E main battle tank for the Spanish Army.
PIZARRO INFANTRY / CAVALRY FIGHTING VEHICLE
The Pizarro infantry / cavalry fighting vehicle has resulted from cooperative development between SBS and Steyr Daimler Puch. The first prototype was finished in 1992. In 1996 the Spanish Government contracted SBS to produce a first phase of 144 units (123 infantry / cavalry (VCI/C), and 21 command (VCPC)). The second phase produced an additional 212 units, including special models including Advanced Surveillance Vehicles (VCOAV), Recovery Vehicles (VCREC) and Engineering Vehicles (VCZ).
The VCI/I Pizarro is a tracked vehicle with a mono-coque armoured steel-plate hull with capacity for seven riflemen and three crew. Its high power / weight ratio is due to a 28t combat weight, and comes equipped with an automatic Mauser MK 30 cannon.
BMR-2
SBS modernized the BMR family for the Spanish Army to extend its useful life by at least 10 years including a 4th echelon overhaul. The vehicles received a new, smaller engine, but with greater specific power, centralization of all electrical connections with quick-connect sockets, new fuel feed system, internal expanding brakes, additional steel armor plating, fire detection and anti-explosive systems, heating, air conditioning and NBC protection, plus a new two-seat turret designated TC-3 A.
M-3 RAPID DEPLOYMENT AMPHIBIOUS EQUIPMENT
The M3 is the world's most modern, most efficient and fastest amphibious bridging and ferrying system. It reduces construction time dramatically and provides increased manoeuvrability and mobility in the water. M3 builds on the excellent cost / utility / efficiency relationship of its predecessors: it is quicker to construct a bridge, provides greater mobility and requires fewer personnel; costs are reduced by greater control system automation.
WEAPONS SYSTEMS
SBS, a leader in 105mm and 155mm artillery pieces, has extensive experience in manufacturing last-generation cannons such as the 155/52 APU SBT howitzer, recoilless cannons for frigates, and guns for battle tanks. The 155/52 APU SBT can be used as coastal or field artillery and can easily be integrated into different command and control systems. In the field of light weapons, the company has developed and produced innovative products such as the LAG 40 SB automatic grenade launcher.
AMMUNITIONS AND PROPELLANTS
SBS manufactures small caliber, medium caliber, artillery and anti-tank ammunition, projection charges, warheads and final assembly and testing of missiles. SBS has developed, patented and exported to European countries the 'ball powder' manufacturing process. It has production lines for single base, double base, and triple base propellants with a solvent process. The company also manufactures metallic cartridges and medium caliber munitions, 5.56mm perforating and 40mm TP, HE, HEDP, among others.
MODERNIZATION PROGRAMS
SBS has enhanced and extended the useful life of thousands of armored vehicles and tanks, to user requirements. All tank models used by the Spanish Army since the 1970s have been modernized, rebuilt or upgraded by SBS.
COOPERATION PROGRAMS
Over the last 30 years, numerous collaboration agreements have allowed SBS to manufacture the best products in their sectors, including the German Leopard 2E MBT, US TOW missiles and Abrams tank components. SBS has a license to manufacture the German H&K G-36 E assault rifles for the Spanish Army, as well as a range of parts and components for a half dozen missiles.
